Jeet Kune Do / Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Cambridge
Jeet Kune Do/Mixed Martial Arts (JKD/MMA) is the base system here at the A.M.A.C. JKD was developed by Legendary Martial Artist Bruce Lee. The philosophy behind JKD was take what works and eliminate what doesn't. Bruce took techniques from a variety of Styles and used only what worked in real life situations to create his own form of combat.
Under Bruce JKD was constantly evolving, If something failed to work it was cut out. After Bruce's death his art continued to evolve with the help of his cutting edge students like my grandmaster Richard Bustillo, Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, and Others. At the A.M.A.C we wholeheartedly believe in Bruce's philosophy and continue in the tradition of Bruce Lee. Unlike most systems that simply teach the same things that have been handed down for hundreds of years, the techniques in JKD are proven or discarded. Anything that doesn't work in the ring or in a street situation will not be taught here. There are no kata's, animal stances, or death touches here!
Our JKD/MMA class incorporates techniques from various Martial art styles such as Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Sambo and many more! We will work striking, grappling, trapping/clinch, submissions, throws/takedowns, and weapons training. We know that every student will have different strengths and weaknesses. Our job is to teach the student a wide variety of techniques so that you can be comfortable in any situation and then let you decide what works best at that time.
Remember Bruce didn't want JKD to be a style, he wanted it to be each individuals own form of combat. What worked for Bruce might not work for you, So we'll help you find what does. Bruce laid the framework for JKD but its up to us to keep it evolving by adding new and updated training methods. We must train with economy of motion and practicality in mind. Bruce Lee used to say "Absorb what is useful, Reject what is useless, and add what is truly your own." This is perfect for us as we don't teach a cookie cutter type of class each student is different and will approach situations differently.
The other area we address in the JKD/MMA class is weapons training (attacking, defending and disarming). Again we will train only what is relevant. We don't waste time training with out dated weapons such as swords or 8 foot long spears as they are not readily available on the street.
We only train with weapons that can be carried on your person. We use the delivery system of Filipino Kali and Eskrima. The Filipino's have been training with weapons for centuries! They specialize in stick and knife fighting and are probably the most dangerous fighters in that range.
The beauty of the Filipino system is that once you've mastered them everything can be used as a weapon! If you can swing a stick you can use a car antenna, backpack, briefcase, umbrella, etc. If you're trained with a knife you can use a broken bottle, ballpoint pen, credit card, key, or anything else that has a point or sharp edge. This type of training is perfect self-defense when other weapons are not available like in an office or on an airplane!
At the AMAC we will try to constantly bring modern, cutting edge training methods to you the student. We will try to encompass all the ranges of combat (kicking, punching, clinch, grappling as well as weapons)to give our students the edge that they may need for self-defense or in the ring!
